The Cubs named Keith Moreland as the new color commentator on WGN Radio Wednesday, finally replacing Ron Santo some two and a half months after Santo died. Moreland is a good choice, though there could hardly have been a bad one: Pat Hughes is such an exceptional play-by-play man that an intern or a sock puppet could share a booth with him with no loss of enjoyment for listeners. Moreland, though, is a Texan with an analytical tilt but no special skills of articulation. Kerry Wood, who may or may not be Moreland’s eventual replacement, is also from Texas and also looks at the game very coolly, so Moreland smooths the transition from Santo to Wood.
